You Can’t Handle The Truth!

oscar.jpg I used to be quite a movie fiend in my youth…. I even had a weekly show here until 2001 (the fact that the domain of the radio is still operational surprises me a lot, but that’s a different story). But now, as I’m getting older and life sometimes gets way stranger than fiction, the only thing that remains is love for old movies and an inexplicable urge to see the Oscars ceremony live, prefferably without the stupid simultaneous translation on Slovene or German TV channels.

I must also admit that I haven’t seen any of this year’s nominees, but if you want the lowdown on this years ceremony giving away the little golden castrate, then you know where to go to..

While we’re on the subject… Apparently, the American Film Institute is considering revising the all-time top 100 movies list, where Citizen Kane is (in my opinion undeservedly) the top dog.
As not to fail a classic H’wood cliche, here’s my top 10 movies (in H’Wood and Slo/Yu category). Even more (to add insult to injury) I will also provide my favourite 10 movie quotes, since AFI did the same… I know this all seems a wee bit adolescent, but one should realise that I sometimes get the feeling that my life is filled mostly with quotes (movie and otherwise).

    1. I don’t think I can create top 10 lists – I’d be worrying whether I’m telling the truth.

But I could use some categories:

      1. Films I’ve seen quite a few times:
      Lord of the Rings
      Dead Man
      2. Films that made me cry:
      The Color Purple
      Breaking the Waves
      3. Films that made me laugh a lot:
      Monty Python
      Black Adder
      4. Films I hated:
      Bad Taste (by Peter Jackson)
      Just Married (with Ashton Kutcher)
      5. Films that really impressed me a lot:
      Apocalypse Now
      Forrest Gump
      6. German films I love:
      Der bewegte Mann
      Wo ist Fred?
      7. Slovenian films I love:
      Ekspres Ekspres

    2. Oh, OK.

I watched all the parts of the documentary “Being Victoria Beckham” on Youtube. Because…erm… because one has to be informed about modern media and society phenomena…erm…

    3. Of course… One has to keep oneself informed… And I can also imagine that a documentary about Posh Spice can provide scores of intelectual stimuli :))

    4. Why yes, have you never wanted to write/read a paper on Women Who Do Not Read? (something like See no wrinkles, ask no whys)

OK OK, so I like David, so what?!?

    5. I see nothing wrong with your affection for Becks – or his left foot at least :))) But now he split to the good ol’ US of A…

    6. I’m afraid I am in for another slip of taste:

I am no fan of Brad Pitt at all but I have a sneaky suspicion his new film Babel could be really good.

It is so difficult: You decide you cannot like them, all those Brangelinas and PoshBecks, and then they do something surprising and you think: HM. … Hm.

    7. surprised not to see Apocalypse Now on your list!
surprised not to see many many quotes that apear on a certain comp in your office/home. But I guess the all time list for anything are really hard to do…i can’t imagine doing one for music.

my number 1. movie would be “In the name of the father”.

my number 1. slovenian movie would be “Outsider” – Ziah Sokolovic rules!

my number 1. quote(well a bit more than just a quote) would be from Snatch – Bullet Tooth Tony: “Now, dicks have drive and clarity of vision, but they are not clever. They smell pussy and they want a piece of the action. And you thought you smelled some good old pussy, and have brought your two small mincey faggot balls along for a good old time. But you’ve got your parties mangled up. There’s no pussy here, just a dose that’ll make you wish you were born a woman. Like a prick, you are having second thoughts. You are shrinking, and your two little balls are shrinking with you. And the fact that you’ve got “Replica” written down the side of your gun, and the fact that I’ve got “Desert Eagle point five O, written down the side of mine, should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now… Fuck off!

Movies that had impresed me, or that I just liked them in general: The Pianist, Schindlers list, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Star Wars, Scarface, The Godfather, Fargo (yes, Fargo) :), Pulp Fiction – love the dialoges, The commitments, the big blue, silence of the lambs,…

movies that I liked as a teenager: rambo, rocky, die hard (“Yippe-ki-yay, mutherfucker!”), platoon, superman, La Bamba :)…

    8. @alcessa: I have a theory that actors and actresses who become celebrities while they’re young soon find their selves on the verge of ruin, experience the mid-life crisis and then start acting.

    9. There are other quotes, which did not make the list, but could have… Like “Hoo-ha” by Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman, or “Fuck!” by Joe Pesci in any of his films 😀

    10. Rollo: Yes, I should have added both The Pianist and In the name of the father, too.

I’m not good at quoting – I forget exact wordings too soon, but:

Pengovsky: FUCK is not a quote. It’s the meaning of life, maybe.
And: there could be something about your theory. There probably is.

    11. My pick for best movies of all time:

      #1) Fargo
      #2) Unforgiven
      #3) To Live
      #4) Shawshank Redemption
      #5) Barfly
      #6) Clockwork Orange
      #7) The Seventh Seal
      #8) Conan the Barbarian
      #9) The Jerk
#10) The Bridges of Madison County

    12. @Michael: Conan the Barbarian?!? Well, degustibus non dispuntandum est 😀 But I see an eclectic mix of vigilante movies and movies with a deep message

@rollo: Then you might also consider “I’m too old for this shit”

@Alcessa: I always thought of Joe Pesci as the less known of the Freud brothers 😀

    13. @pengovsky: Yes and What’s up duck” to.. 🙂 “rabbit season, duck season, rabbit season, duck season, rabbit season, duck season” 🙂

    14. Suddenly I do remember a quote I’ve internalised. It is from an Agatha Christie film: “A house full of empty people”. There is no deeper meaning to that, though: it was a special house where rooms were… turned around and people in them suddenly disappeared, if you didn’t have a clue and used the only door to that room to enter.

I have Clockwork Orange at Home, it belongs to the Best Films Ever as chosen by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung. But I couldn’t decide yet to watch it.

Ouch, Freud! And I “meant” the non-Freudian sense of your beloved quote! 🙂

    15. @rollo: Be wevy, wevy quiet… I’m huntin’ wabbits 😀

@alcessa: That’s Monty Python then – life’s a piece of shit, when you look at it 😀

    16. best movie: mediterraneo
worst movie: all movie’s by tarantino
best quotes: Son, your ego’s writing checks your body can’t cash (Top Gun); Gentlemen! You can’t fight in here. This is the War Room! (Dr. Strangelove); NO! NO! Beer brings pain! (Simpsons); Play it, Sam, play As Time Goes By. (casablanca)

    17. I have forgotten two very important films:

      Dirty Dancing

But they are for ladies only. I thought Top Gun was for girlies only ?

    18. I wouldn’t call Top Gun one of the best movies ever, not at all… But it did offer some great lines.

BTW: Tom Cruise as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell survives all throuhg the film and saves “The American Way of Life”. His buddy, “Goose”, dies in the middle of the flick. Now: Tom Cruise (Maverick) goes on to become one of the highest paid actors ever, while Anthony Edwards (Goose) goes on to become cancer-stricken dr. Mark Green in TV series ER. Go figure 🙂

    19. Oh, you mean the radio? Wouldn’t know, I’m not listening to it right now. I think that 11 hours of work was quite enough for a slightly sick person 😀 .. But I’ll look it up tomorrow 😉

    20. OK. So here are the facts (I forgot that my mind is not Read Only):

There was some music playing on radio KAOS and it very much reminded me of The Dirty Three, a great Australian band that played a few times in Ljubljana, too.

So as to make sure that it is really them, I thought I’d ask you, but I wanted to put it briefly, because it is an off topic question and nothing one could discuss.

So I did ask but I forgot to mention it is music I am talking about.

Then I wanted to explain I wasn’t talking about any dirty games, just music.

And I’ll come back after I have learnt to ask simple questions in a simple way. Like:

      Get it?

    21. Thanks, I will (it’s nothing a couple of Coldrex pills couldn’t fix)… And good of you to take the time an walk me through the flow of your mind… It’s much clearer now 🙂

Just a hint… there’s a marquee on out website (just above the news section) where the current song is displayed. In case you ever get curious again 🙂

    22. I’ll need you to walk me through Slovene movies when I’ve returned, Pengovsky. Too bad they’re not available with subtitling, as far as I know. I saw Crna Macka, Beli Macor on tv over here and liked it. Another one I enjoyed was Varuh Meje. Over all, I find the level of films coming from the former YU countries to be quite good. Well, you can’t do worse than Hollywood, can you? There’s this Serbian movie I like, Apsolutnih Sto, and of course No Man’s Land is a really good one as well.
I’ll try to come up with 10 that are really to my liking :

1- Last of the Mohicans (I’m an American Indian nut and this portrays that era rather correctly. There’s also a lot of humor in the macho quotes Daniel Day Lewis ‘s character spouts)
2- Lost Highway (One of the best movies David Lynch ever made)
3- Mallrats (Thanks for introducing Kevin Smith movies to me, Baya)
4- The LOTR Trilogy (One Trilogy to rule them all)
5- Star Wars V : The Empire Strikes Back (Luke, I am your father)
6- It’s A Wonderful Life (Best xmas movie I’ll ever see)
7- The Sound of Music (Best non- xmas xmas movie I’ve grown up with)
8- Soleil Trompeur (Best movie about family life in Stalinist Russia)
9- Der Untergang (Besides the parts about Hitler and his crones, it shows the way everyday people in Berlin went through at the end of the war in a chilling manner, which makes it more than a biopic about dear Adolf’s last insane days. By the way, Magda Goebbels was a very sick puppy.)
10- Thunderheart (I’m an Indian nut, what did you expect? A really good fictionalized story about several things that went on and still go on in the Indian reservations today and the schisms that run between the tribes themselves. Best racist quote which shows how the white populace of South Dakota thinks about the Indians up to this day : ‘Goddamn Prairieniggers!’)

    23. And get well soon, P! Make sure you’ll be in good health by the time I’ll deliver that crate of Kasteelbier at your doorstep. 😉

    24. I think SLO movies may have upgraded to English subtitles… But I’ll have to check it out just to be on the safe side… And don’t worry. If I don’t get better by the time you get to Slovenia, I’m sure a bottle or two (or five) of Kasteelbier will do wonders for my health. Or, to put in the words of a Belgian student I met once in Ljubljana: “There’s too much blood in my alcochol” 😀

    25. Ah, zelo dobro! In that case I’m going to check out some of the movies you put on here, if they’re out on DVD.
And that guy must indeed be Belgian, because we all say that :D. Or, in the words of Adam Pearson, ex- guitar player for The Sisters Of Mercy : “There is too much blood in my vodkastream” 😉 Anyway, I’ve no doubt a healthy portion of Kasteelbier will do you good in any case… 😀
