[...] It all started even before New Year’s takeover, when the Eternal Foreign Minsiter held a briefing for foreign representatives, where he was expected to outline Slovene priorities during the presidency. Instead he embarked upon sharing his version of the state of media freedom, specifically, he slammed the “petition 571” as being nothing more than a load of bollocks (not in those exact words, of course). His line of thought is detailed here. [...]

Oh, you've read it! And even liked it! I'm flattered. I can send you the original English version if you like.

BTW, I'm already training for the next Pot spominov walk...putting in lots of kilometers on the trails around here (so is Lyra). If you're ever down this way and have a few hours to spare give a shout and let's go trekking.

BTW: I was meaning to tell you this for a very long time (I even might have, but forgot about it): I positively love your afterword to Stupid White Men... Sometimes I read just that, because it appears timeless - just like Rupel :)

(I’m surprised you didn’t mention that little episode of infamy and betrayal in your post)

Well, then there's that too :D I should have mentioned it, but portraying Rupel as a stooge for US foreign policy is a bit of a same-old-same-old, no? :D

I mean, one could go as far as to try to tie him to the shadier part of the US administration, but I'll leave that to others for the time being.

Rupel is a contemptible figure. A self-serving unprincipled political opportunist with a thoroughly mediocre intellect. I can't think of a single politician who has done more to undermine Slovenia's independence and stain its international reputation. Rop was unwise to keep him as FM at all, and should have dumped him IMMEDIATELY after Rupel signed the Vilnius Declaration (I'm surprised you didn't mention that little episode of infamy and betrayal in your post). That was a despicable and shameful act that many, including me, will never forgive him for. Or his general outsourcing of foreign policy to American neocon and Lockheed Martin lobbyist Bruce Pitcairn Jackson.

In the afterword to the Slovene version of Michael Moore's Stupid White Men, I nominated Rupel for the title of Slovenia's national champion in that category. In my opinion he really is one of the very worst characters in the Slovenian political landscape. It will take years to repair all the damage he has done.
