His replacement was widely seen as a backlash by Laško brewery (which owns Delo, which in turn owns Mag) againt PM Janez Janša after he attacked Laško and Delo’s journalists during the vote of confidence. The equation is simple: a subdued press equals a successful presidecy. Which in turn means the government doubts its own ability to lead the EU to the extent of pre-staging its victory podium and squashing any and all voices of dissent, no matter how founded or unfounded they may be. On that note, a small anecdote which may or may not be true, but since Mr. Rupel is bending the reality, I may be allowed the benefit of the doubt as well: when PM Tone Rop was deciding what to do with his increasingly undisciplined foreign minister, one of the options was to make him a European Commissioner, whereupon a discreet phone call was made from the cabinet of the Commission president Romano Prodi, urging Rop to send someone… well… anyone else but Rupel. Janez Potočnik was named as a replacement candidate and he became one of the most popular and successful politicians both in Brussels and in Ljubljana. I have never seen such flaccid opposition. One week they are calling for the PM to resign, when he says he might do so they start whining about unstatesmanlike behavior. If they had any chance or capability of fixing anything, they should have jumped at the opportunity. What kind of opposition is reluctant to take power? Noo, instead all we heard was whining from their side. Then some more whining from the PM. What a bunch of losers, seriously. I do respect some politicians, although I might not even agree with their political stance. One would be Dr. Bucar, who has regrettably gone bonkers in the old age. Umm, please.
