[...] Borut Pahor, the leader of the Social Democrats and self-styled (literally!) next Prime Minister yesterday cut another notch in his belt which (to put it colorfully) holds his would-be-primeministerial pants. Namely, he snached Mitja Gaspari from the arms of the rival left-wing LDS singining “an agreement on political cooperation” with him. Photo by Matej Družnik (source) You probably remember Mitja Gaspari as the not-so-lucky loser of the presidential elections when he lost second place to Danilo Türk by less than 3000 votes. Türk went on to win the second round and be elected President with the largest majority ever, while Gaspari was sort of left sulking in the corner, perhaps feeling that LDS on whose balot he ran did not do enough to support him (bear in mind that this party is only begining to recuperate from a disastrous breakdown following losing the 2004 election).
[...] Furthermore, voting preferences for electing a president are not the same as for parliamentary elections. As I noted some time ago, the role of the president is largely ceremonial, but not completely insignificant as it carries great moral significance. Which of course means that people will choose a president who will in their opinion represent their values best. So, by extension, you can measure this country’s values by looking at the president (Incumbent president Janez Drnovšek being an exception to the rule as his transformaton took place while he was in office). Or - at the very least - you can look at the runner-up to see which values are not shared by the majority. [...]

[...] The second round of Slovene presidential elections will be held on Sunday and yesterday saw a first head-to-head debate between Lojze Peterle, winner of the first round and runner-up Danilo Türk. The former is supported by Social Democrats, Zares and DeSUS, while Lojze Peterle enjoys support of the ruling right-wing coalition (save DeSUS, which is actually left-wing, but we won’t go there today). Who will be the king of Sloveve hearts? According to the law, last polls can be conducted a week before election day and those published on Saturday (and some published on Monday in a clear breach of the said law) showed a not-so-surprising, but nevertheless dramatic turning of tables. Namely: Danilo Türk who only barely made it to the second round, defeating Mitja Gaspari by a fraction of a percentage point, now has an enourmous lead over Peterle. While the latter is supported by some 30 percent of those polled, Türk enjoys a hefty 60 percent support. [...]

I am not reliable, no.
In fact, I had to explain to my hubby today that now I also come from a small place with terribly strong nationalist leanings... Damn.

Mais, oui! :)

Funny about the ballot, though... Perhaps they couldn't find your address... Or maybe you're not reliable enough

Hm, I haven't requested a ballot and I haven't received one (nonetheless). It would be a funny feeling to belong to a group of people living outside Slovenia and still influencing your daily politics and all. Non?

Jelinčič is the perfect man for the opposition, but I wonder how he'd handle actual power once in the saddle where he'd have to compromise.

He really is the winner of these elections in many respects and that is indeed worrying as it unveils the predominant state of mind in Slovenia. Not that it's all that different from same in the rest of Europe, say Switzerland?

Zmago Jelinčič is still a cause for concern. He has proven time and again that he can tap draw from the pool of the disadvantaged, disenchanted and disheartened voters. His political platform is of course dully adapted each election cycle to suit the needs of his (usually one-time) voters.

But what happens when/if the resentment agains all things foreign reaches huge levels and is combined with resentment against "traditional" politics?

Jelinčič is perfectly capable of riding a wave of nationalism and xenophoby once again. He has no scruples to begin with and that makes him a potentially disastrous choice.
